Originally developed as way to showcase the warm mid-winter weather of Pasadena, California to people from the East Coast, the first Tournament of Roses in 1890 involved a variety of games and a parade of carriages decked with roses. A football game was added to the schedule in 1902 and became a permanent addition in 1916.
